Winter Birding at The Bridgeview B&B

Birding through the seasons in Pennsylvania
Birding activity at the start of our calendar year depends largely on the severity of the winter. The hardiest of birds remain in January. Topping the list, resident birds are juncos, chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, finches, song sparrows, blue jays, a few woodpeckers, the ever-present crow, hawks and Bald Eagles. Some game birds, such as the Ring-necked Pheasant, Ruffed Grouse and Wild Turkey, also stay with us and some ducks may linger around or even reside the whole winter, provided there is open water. Birding in January can still be enjoyable and rewarding.
From wildlife of all sorts to the gorgeous scenic backdrop of Central Pennsylvania's Blue Mountains, The Bridgeview Bed and Breakfast is a nature lovers dream! The Bridgeview provides several different indoor and outdoor ways to observe nature's beauty for that photo op or to leisurely sit and gaze the day away. We feature comfortable rooms all with private baths, Wifi and a delicious breakfast. Visit our website for a virtual tour, and be sure to look at all of the guest comments on Trip Advisor . FEBRUARY 2ND IS GROUND HOG DAY!!!

One of the most famous days in PA, Groundhog Day with Punxsutawney Phil, is quite an event.
The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a Celtic tradition that says that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2, the Pagan holiday of Imbolc, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early.
The ties in Pennsylvania may actually come from German tradition, in which clear skies on Candlemas Day, February 2, were said to herald cold weather ahead. In Germany, the tradition evolved into a myth that if the sun came out on Candlemas, a hedgehog would cast its shadow, predicting snow all the way into May. When German immigrants settled in PA, they transferred the tradition onto local fauna, replacing hedgehogs with groundhogs.
Today, the town of Punxsutawney celebrates the legendary groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, with a festival. During the ceremony, which begins well before the winter sunrise, Phil emerges with his "wife" Phyllis and "daughter" Phelicia from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob, located in a rural area south-east of town. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, he has predicted six more weeks of winter weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, he has predicted an "early spring". Here's to hoping for no shadow!!!

Today is National Hot Chocolate Day!

Each year on January 31, National Hot Chocolate Day warms up people across the country by celebrating the timeless cold-weather beverage.
In America, we often use the terms hot chocolate and hot cocoa interchangeably. However, the two beverages are different.
Cocoa vs Hot Chocolate
We make hot cocoa with cocoa powder, heated milk or water, and sugar.
We make hot chocolate, the thicker, more flavorful beverage from ground chocolate containing cocoa butter. Hot chocolate has also been around longer than hot cocoa.. This thicker, creamier beverage offers medicinal benefits for stomach ailments, and there are other health benefits to drinking hot chocolate. Cocoa contains significant amounts of antioxidants that may help prevent cancer. It has also been shown that the cocoa beans help with digestion. The flavonoids that are found in the cocoa also have a positive effect on arterial health.
You saw it here, folks, chocolate IS good for you!!! Enjoy a hot chocolate or hot cocoa at The Bridgeview Bed and Breakfast located in Marysville PA, on the Susquehanna River. Enjoy rooms with private baths, at home atmosphere, country setting and beautiful view of the river and mountains!! Visit our web page , and be sure to look at our guest reviews at Trip Advisor .
