Railfaning Around the Bridgeview ~ Steelton PA

Even though The Steelton Plant shut down last year, operations continue at The Durabond pipe mill where steel plate is brought in by rail and formed into large pipe sections which are also shipped out by rail. Several small center cab locomotives serve this facility. Most of these activities can be observed and photographed from public property.
The Steelton & Highspire Railroad still operates between the pipe plant and Norfolk Southern, using a variety of older, classic EMD switchers. Cars loaded with Plate Steel, and empty pipe flatcars are brought in, unloaded, and loaded pipe cars are brought out to the interchange with NS.

Also Norfolk Southern runs a daily local on the Steelton Industrial Branch, which offers some surprisingly scenic industrial locations for photography.
